How do I connect NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000?

Connecting legacy instruments to a modern NMEA 2000 network is an easy process using our NGW-1/NGX/WGX bi-directional conversion gateways. To connect one of these devices to your NMEA 0183 instrument, simply connect the output (Talker) wires from the device to the input (Listener) wires on the device. The M12 NMEA 2000 connector found on the other cable on the device is then plugged into your NMEA 2000 network via a T-Piece or similar, allowing the data to be shared with every device on the network.  

One thing to note is the baud rate of the device must match that of the NMEA 0183 device. Typically the device will be at either 4800 baud for common instruments such as wind, GPS, etc… and 38400 (high speed) baud for AIS. If the baud rates do not match, the device will not receive and convert any NMEA 0183 data.
