The importance of accurate boating data is arguably never more vital than for those operating workboats. From tugs to ferries, Coast Guard to fishing vessels, better data accuracy means greater efficiency and safer journeys. However, there are distinct challenges facing workboat owners and fleet managers. Below, we look at some of these challenges and how best to tackle them.

Taking advantage of newer technology

Many workboats have complex NMEA 0183 systems with networked equipment onboard. Owners wanting to benefit from the higher data transfer rate and plug & play nature of NMEA 2000 networks, are often concerned about the high cost burden of replacing NMEA 0183 equipment with NMEA 2000 variants. However, according to this article in Workboat Magazine, it has never been easier or more cost effective to upgrade from NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000.
The Actisense NGW-1 is the perfect NMEA 2000 Gateway device to allow workboats to keep their existing NMEA 0183 equipment and ALSO benefit from the robust NMEA 2000 protocol.

Data Logging & Analysis

Another key challenge that workboat owners and fleet managers contact us about is how to make the best use of the data on their vessels. When we launched our W2K-1 NMEA 2000 to WiFi Gateway, we included a smart 8GB industrial grade SD card built in, which provides valuable data logging capability. Users are then able to take captured data and read, understand and analyze it using our free NMEA READER software. This provides clear indications about where efficiencies can be made for future journeys.
Another great feature of the W2K-1 is its ability to transmit that data to any WiFi enabled device, and also use that data with leading marine apps.
